OXYCONTIN SETTLEMENT

The makers of OxyContin, Purdue Pharma, L.P. were the focus of a criminal investigation for their misbranding of the drug and for the false representations they made regarding the risk of addiction.  In May 2007, company executes pled guilty and agreed to pay over $600 million in fines for their actions.

They were accused of engaging in a “long-term scheme” to maximize sales by providing false and misleading information to doctors about the risk of OxyContin addiction problems.  Sales representatives were trained to make false representations that the drug was not as addictive as other medications and that it did not cause euphoria or withdrawal symptoms.
