Fosamax Information and Problems
The osteoporosis drug Fosamax has been associated with an increased risk of jaw and bone decay. Lawsuits are being reviewed nationwide. >>REQUEST A CONSULTATION
Fosamax (generic name alendronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate medication prescribed for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, osteopenia and Paget’s disease of the bone.
The medication increases bone mass density and reduces the occurrence of fractures for patients with osteoporosis. However, studies have shown that it has the opposite effect in the jawbone and major joints like the hip, shoulder, and knee, leading to infections and easily breakable bones. It may also increase the risk of femur fractures, or broken thigh bones.
The manufacturers of Fosamax, Merck, failed to adequately warn about the risk of jaw problems and bone deterioration. The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential lawsuits for individuals who have been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteonecrosis of the hip, osteonecrosis of the knee or osteonecrosis of the shoulder.

JAW PROBLEMS WITH FOSAMAX
Long term use of Fosamax has been linked to the painful and often disfiguring condition, osteonecrosis of the jaw (also referred to as ONJ, Dead Jaw or Bis-Phossy Jaw). Osteonecrosis of the jaw following use of Fosamax is often diagnosed after a dental procedure, such as a tooth extraction. More recent studies show that use of Fosamax can lead to osteonecrosis of the hip and osteonecrosis of the shoulder, as well as of the knee.
Merck, the manufacturer of Fosamax, knew about the risk of ostronecrosis of the jaw, but failed to take steps to properly warn patients, doctors and dentists. Saiontz & Kirk is currently investigating Fosamax lawsuit claims for individuals who have taken Fosamax and experienced jaw problems.
Recent studies have also suggested that Fosamax side effects may lead to decay and death of other bones besides the jaw, such as the hip, knee or shoulder.
