Yasmin, which is an older version of the popular Yaz birth control, was originally developed by Berlex, which has been acquired by Bayer Healthcare. The birth control pill was aggressively marketed without adequate warnings about potentially life-threatening problems.

YASMIN PROBLEMS

Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) is a combined hormonal oral contraceptive, which was first introduced in April 2001.  It was the first birth control pill to contain the progestin drospirenone, which is unlike other progestins available in the United States.

After Bayer acquired Berlex in 2006, they began marketing Yaz, a nearly identical drug. Both contain 3mg of drospirenone, with Yaz containing 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet, as opposed to Yasmin, which contains 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet.  A generic version, Ocella, is also now available.

The Yasmin problems are linked to the use of drospirenone, which works against the body’s normal regulation of a balance between salt and water.  This can cause elevated potassium levels, known as hyperkalemia, which is known to cause serious heart problems and other health issues.  The product labeling and package insert for Yasmin recommend that blood tests be performed to check users potassium level within the first month of use, and such blood tests are not necessary for any other types of birth control pills.

The prominent consumer advocacy group Public Citizen listed Yasmin as a “Do Not Use” drug in April 2002, citing the following reasons:

  • Yasmin side effects caused by drospirenone increase blood levels of potassium, which could result in heart problems and other health concerns
  • There is no evidence that the drug is superior to older contraceptives or that the benefits outweigh the risk of Yasmin dangers.

Berlex and Bayer have known about the risk of potential Yasmin problems for some time and multiple studies have established the potential risk of life-threatening injuries.  Despite the known risks, the drug makers have continued to market Yasmin without adequate warnings and introduced Yaz, another oral contraceptive containing drospirenone, which also carries the same risks.

Potential compensation may be available as a result of the drug makers’ failure to warn about the potential Yasmin problems.  All cases are reviewed and investigated under a contingency fee, which means that clients of our Yasmin attorneys pay no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained.
