Earlier this month, an Icy Hot recall was issued for Heat Therapy patches, following reports of several hundred serious burns among users. Icy Hot Heat Therapy is designed to relieve muscle and joint pain in the arm, leg, neck or back, but it has left many users with first degree, second degree and third degree burns. The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential Icy Hot recall lawsuits throughout the United States.

>>PRIOR POST (2/12/2008): Icy Hot Patch Recall

Icy Hot Heat Therapy was introduced in December 2006 by Chattem, Inc. for treatment of arthritis, backaches, muscle strains, sprains and cramps. The self-heating, air-activated disposable patches were on the market for only a few months when reports of serious burns began to surface, particularly among older patients with more sensitive skin.

In September 2007, the label for the Icy Hot Patch was updated to include additional information about the proper use of the product, since the manufacturer attempted to claim the reported burns were caused by overuse or incorrect application of the patches. However, after reports of burns continued to surface, the product was removed from the market on February 8, 2008.

The Icy Hot Patch Recall applies to the:

  • Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Back
  • Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Arm, neck, and leg
  • Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Arm, neck and leg samples packaged with cartons of 3-oz. Aspercreme Pain Relieving Cream

Despite the recall, many users remain unaware of the recall and continue to use the Icy Hot Heat Therapy products. The defective patches could get too hot, causing problems ranging from mild burns and skin irritation to severe burns, with permanent scarring and disfigurement.

My daughter applied the icy hot roll on last night, she had redness and swelling all over, even further than where it was applied. She hurt and felt like she was burning. She washed off many times and applied ice packs, but is still hurting today even though redness is going away.
