Chattem, Inc. has issued a nationwide recall for their Icy Hot Heat Therapy products after receiving a substantial number of reports of serious skin problems, including third degree burns. The disposable air-activated heat patches could cause permanent skin damage after being applied to help ease muscle pain or joint pain.

The Icy Hot recall applies to products labeled as “Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat”, which are packaged in a red plastic pouch. There are two variations of the recalled Icy Hot Heat Therapy, one for use on the Back and the other for the Arm, Neck and Leg. The recall also applies to “samples” of the arm, neck and leg patch which were distributed with yellow and red cartons of 3 oz. Aspercreme Pain Relieving Crème.

The manufacturer initially received reports of problems last year, which prompted them to expand the label in September 2007 to include additional instructions on proper use and warnings for individuals over 55 years old, who may have sensitive skin. Reports from over 200 people who suffered first degree burns, second degree burns, third degree burns and other serious skin problems led the manufacturer to remove the heat therapy products from the market this week.

Individuals who have one of the recalled Icy Hot Heat Therapy products have been advised to immediately stop using them. Any unopened products can be returned to Chattem, Inc. for a refund. However, if you, a friend or family member suffered a serious Icy Hot burn which required medical treatment, review your legal rights with our product liability lawyers before contacting the manufacturer by requesting a free consultation.
