Essure Procedure Problems and Complications
Essure is a permanent form of transcervical sterilization, which has been available as an outpatient procedure since 2002. It was first introduced by Conceptus, and is now manufactured and sold by Bayer Healthcare.
The device is made up of flexible coils that are inserted into the fallopian tubes, which are designed to cause scar tissue to develop that blocks the tubes and prevent insemination.
Essure Side Effects
- Pelvic Pain
- Cramping
- Cysts
- Bleeding
- Hemorrhage
- Unintended Pregnancy
- Miscarriage
More than 750,000 women have reportedly received an Essure implant, and a surprisingly large number have experienced painful and debilitating injuries and complications from Essure.
Essure coils are supposed to remain in place within the fallopian tubes, providing long-term sterilization and birth control for the rest of a woman’s life.
Although the manufacturer has promoted Essure as safe and effective, providing a “worry free” form of birth control, thousands of problems have been reported involving women who potential Essure problems following the procedure.
The FDA has received more than 5,000 adverse event reports involving Essure, including 3,300 claims of abdominal pain, more than 1,400 involving menstrual irregularities, nearly the same amount of unexplained headaches and about a thousand reports of fatigue and weight fluctuation. In many cases, these complications have resulted in women requiring a hysterectomy for Essure coil removal.
In September 2015, the FDA convened a panel of independent experts in response to growing concerns about the Essure implant risks. Testimony provided at the hearing by a number of women and critics suggested that an Essure recall should be issued to remove the birth control implant from the market.
Although Essure placement is permanent, limited studies were conducted by the manufacturer on the long-term risks associated with the device.
More than 13 years after Essure was introduced, the FDA advisory committee recommended that the agency require Bayer to provide better safety data, create a patient registry and conduct new clinical trials on Essure safety and effectiveness.
As a result of problems following an Essure procedure, women may be entitled to financial compensation for the severe damage suffered to their health, mental well-being and overall quality of life.
