Fosamax (generic name alendronate sodium) is a bisphosphonate medication prescribed for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, osteopenia and Paget’s disease of the bone.
The medication increases bone mass density and reduces the occurrence of fractures for patients with osteoporosis. However, studies have shown that it has the opposite effect in several bones and joints, causing decay of the jawbone, hip, shoulder, and knee. It has also been linked to an increased risk of femur fractures, or broken thigh bones, with long-term Fosamax use.
The manufacturers of Fosamax, Merck, failed to adequately warn about the risk of problems and bone deterioration with the medication. The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential lawsuits for individuals who have been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteonecrosis of the hip, osteonecrosis of the knee or osteonecrosis of the shoulder.
