Onglyza Cancer Side Effects
Onglyza (saxagliptin) was approved in 2009 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The oral medication was jointly developed and introduced by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, quickly becoming a top selling drug, with more than $700 million in sales by 2011.
The drug belongs to a class of medications known as incretin mimetics, which work by mimicking the incretin hormones that the body usually produces to naturally stimulate the release of insulin in response to a meal. Other drugs in this class include the blockbuster medications Januvia, Janumet, Byetta, Victoza and others.
Studies have suggested that side effects of Onglyza and other incretin mimetic diabetes drugs may increase the risk of chronic pancreatitis, which may lead to pancreatic cancer for some users.
In March 2013, a study published in the medical journal Diabetes found that pancreatic tissue from users of incretin mimetics had evidence of increased pancreatic mass and precancerous cellular changes. This has further increased concerns about the link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer.
