Onglyza Lawyers Reviewing Heart Failure Cases
The product liability lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential Onglyza lawsuits for individuals throughout the United States who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or suffered heart failure that may have been caused by the popular type 2 diabetes drug.
Studies have suggested that Onglyza side effects may increase the risk of chronic pancreatitis, which may cause some users to develop pancreatic cancer. Other research has also indicated that there may be a link between Onglyza and heart failure.
It appears that AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb withheld important information about the risk of health problems from Onglyza. As a result, financial compensation may be available through a product liability lawsuit for individuals diagnosed with:
- Heart Failure
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Wrongful Death
All cases are reviewed by our Onglyza lawyers under a contingency fee agreement, which means there are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained. Request a free consultation and claim evaluation.
Onglyza Cancer Side Effects
Onglyza (saxagliptin) was approved in 2009 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The oral medication was jointly developed and introduced by AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb, quickly becoming a top selling drug, with more than $700 million in sales by 2011.
The drug belongs to a class of medications known as incretin mimetics, which work by mimicking the incretin hormones that the body usually produces to naturally stimulate the release of insulin in response to a meal. Other drugs in this class include the blockbuster medications Januvia, Janumet, Byetta, Victoza and others.
Studies have suggested that side effects of Onglyza and other incretin mimetic diabetes drugs may increase the risk of chronic pancreatitis, which may lead to pancreatic cancer for some users.
In March 2013, a study published in the medical journal Diabetes found that pancreatic tissue from users of incretin mimetics had evidence of increased pancreatic mass and precancerous cellular changes. This has further increased concerns about the link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer.
Onglyza Heart Failure Problems
In addition to concerns about the potential risk of cancer, studies have suggested that side effects of Onglyza may increase the risk of heart failure for some users.
In a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2013, researchers found that users of Onglyza had an increased rate of heart failure hospitalization.
In February 2014, the FDA launched an investigation into the potential risk of Onglyza heart problems, which will involve an evaluation of clinical trial data to evaluate what regulatory actions may be necessary. This could include requiring the manufacturer to update the warning label or even lead to an Ongylza recall.
Onglyza Class Action Lawyers
It appears that the makers of Onglyza may have withheld important safety information from consumers and the medical community. As a result, financial compensation may be available through an Ongylza clas action lawsuit or individual injury claim for individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or heart failure.
