Diflucan side effects have been linked to an increased risk of serious and potentially life-threatening health problems and birth defects for babies when high doses of the medication are used during pregnancy.

Financial compensation may be available through a Diflucan lawsuit for children who have experienced health problems, such as:

  • Congential Heart Disease
  • Cleft Palate or Cleft Lip
  • Flat Head Syndrome or Head Deformity
  • Abnormal Skull or Face Formation
  • Femoral Bowing or Bent Thigh Bones
  • Thin Ribs and Long Bones
  • Muscle Weakness or Joint Deformities

DIFLUCAN SIDE EFFECTS: BIRTH MALFORMATIONS AND DEFECTS

Diflucan (fluconazole) is the first of a relatively new subclass of anti-fungal medications, which is used for treatment of certain kinds of yeast infections and meningitis caused by a type of fungus. It may also be used to prevent yeast infections among individuals treated with chemotherapy or radiation before a bone marrow transplant.

Multiple cases of birth defects from Diflucan use during pregnancy have been reported among infants born to women who were given chronic, high doses of the medication (400-800 milligrams per day). Some of the Diflucan birth malformations and defects that have been reported include:

  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Brachycephaly or Flat Head Syndrome (involving a short, broad head)
  • Abnormal Face or Skull Development
  • Oral Clefts (involving an opening in the lip or palate of the mouth)
  • Bowing of the Thigh Bones (femoral bowing)
  • Thin Ribs and Long Bones
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Joint Deformities

The Diflucan birth defects involved distinct congential anomalies that rarely occur in the general population. The reports of Diflucan problems shared some characteristics with the autosomal recessive genetic disorder known as Antley-Bidler syndrome.

REVIEW A CASE

In August 2011, the FDA announced an update to the Diflucan warnings to make sure women were aware of the Diflucan pregnancy risks when high doses of the medication are used during the first trimester. The pregnancy category was changed from Category C to Category D, meaning that there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on available data. However a Diflucan recall for use during pregnancy was not issued because the agency determined that there may be potential benefits from the use of the drug in pregnant women with serious or life-threatening conditions, despite the risk of birth defects.

As a result of the drug makers failure to adequately warn about the risk of Diflucan side effects earlier, women were unaware of the extent of the risk associated with use of the medication during pregnancy. Warnings are particularly important since the risk is present during the first trimester, when many women are not even aware they are pregnant.

If adequate information about the risk of birth defects from Diflucan was provided earlier, pregnant women could have avoided the drug and women of child bearing age could have taken steps to avoid becoming pregnant on Diflucan. The FDA has now recommended that all doctors warn women about the risks associated with using the medication during pregnancy, and patients are informed to immediately notify their doctor if they become pregnant while taking fluconazole.
