SSRI antidepressants (including Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft) have been linked to serious side effects which could result in permanent injuries.>>REQUEST A CASE EVALUATION
Side effects of a newer type of antidepressants, known as SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), may lead to an increased risk of serious side effects. The medications in this class include: include Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride), Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (fluvoxamine sertraline), Aropax (paroxetine) and Cipramil (citalopram).
SSRI antidepressants are prescribed primarily for treatment of depression, but may also be given for conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorders and social phobia.
Potential injuries from antidepressant side effects include:
- Suicide attempts
- Antidepressant birth defects when taken by pregnant women
- Serotonin Syndrome when combined with migraine medication
- Increased risk of fractures and bone loss among older adults
The lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk are reviewing potential lawsuits for individuals who have experienced problems as a result of an antidepressant.

ANTIDEPRESSANT SUICIDE SIDE EFFECTS
Antidepressant side effects have been linked to an increased risk of suicide when compared with use of a sugar pill. Paxil side effects have been shown to increased the risk of suicide attempts for young adults, especially those between 18 and 30. In May 2006 the FDA issued a warning to doctors that suicidal behavior may be increased by the use of the antidepressant.
Other antidepressants have previously been linked to an increased risk of suicide among children. However, recent information indicates that the risk for all antidepressants may extend to adults as well.

ANTIDEPRESSANT BIRTH DEFECT SIDE EFFECTS
Persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) may be caused as a side effect of SSRI antidepressants when taken after the 20th week of pregnancy. In November 2006, the FDA issued a public health advisory indicated that the use of Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft or other SSRI antidepressants by pregnant women could lead to a six times greater risk of the birth defect.
PPHN is a serious and potentially fatal condition for the infant where they may become hypoxic because of abnormal blood flow to the heart and lungs. The manufacturers prior failure to warn of this possible antidepressant side effect may have caused unnecessary injuries for newborns. If your child or family member has been diagnosed with persistent, pulmonary hypertension in newborns (PPHN) after the mother took an antidepressant during pregnancy, request a free consulation.

SEROTONIN SYNDROME FROM ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND MIGRAIN MEDICATIONS
The combination of certain migraine medications and antidepressants taken together may cause the serious and potentially life threatening condition, serotonin syndrome. In July 2006 the FDA issued an advisory regarding the risk of serotonin syndrome side effects and requested that manufacturers update the drug labels to warn of combination of migraine medications and antidepressants.
If you, a friend or family member have been diagnosed with serotonin syndrome after taking migraine medication and SSRI antidepressants, such as Paxil, Prozac or Zoloft, request a free consultation.

INCREASE RISK OF BONE LOSS AND FRACTURES IN ELDERLY
Studies have demonstrated that when SSRI antidepressants are taken by older adults, they could weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures. As many as 40% of elderly adults are taking an antidepressant and lose of bone density could pose a significant health risk for them. Balance problems increase their risks of falling, and with weaker bones they could suffer an life-altering bone fracture, which could even lead to death in severe cases.
