YAZ AND YASMIN STROKE AND HEART ATTACK SIDE EFFECTS
Yaz, Yasmin and a generic Yasmin version marketed as Ocella all contain a combination of the hormones ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and drospirenone (progestin) to prevent pregnancy. These birth control pills are the only oral contraceptives available in the United States that contain drospirenone, a drug that is known to affect the body’s normal mechanism of regulating a balance between salt and water. This can cause elevated potassium levels, a condition known as hyperkalemia, which is known to cause a number of serious and potentially life-threatening heart problems.
Yasmin was first developed in April 2001 by Berlex Laboratories, which was later acquired by Bayer. Shortly after it was introduced, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen listed it among their “DO NOT USE” drugs because it contains the untested and unsafe fourth generation progestin drospirenone. This increases the risk of Yasmin heart attacks and strokes, and the drug provides no clear benefit over safer birth control pills.
Lawsuits over Yaz and Yasmin heart attacks and strokes allege that Bayer and Berlex failed to adequately research the side effects of the birth control pills before heavily marketing the drugs without adequate warnings about the risk of heart problems. The lawsuits also allege that a Yaz and Yasmin recall should have been issued after the birth control pills were introduced once it became apparent that they posed an unreasonably dangerous risk of heart attack, stroke and sudden death.
