Yaz and Yasmin, as well as the generic Ocella, use a combination of the hormones ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, a new type of progestin that is unique to these birth control pills. The use of drospirenone can elevate potassium levels, which could increase the risk of blood clots and other injuries.
An August 2009 study published in the British Medical Journal highlighted the Yasmin and Yaz blood clot risk, finding that users of such birth control pills that contain drospirenone face a 6.3 times increased risk of blood clots when compared to women who were not on the pill. In addition, while all forms of birth control carry some risk of blood clots, researchers found that women between 18 and 50 taking birth control containing drospirenone were nearly four times more likely to suffer a first pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) than women using some other forms of oral birth control, such as pills containing levonorgestrel.
An untreated pulmonary embolism can lead to collapses, and circulation problems. Some experts predict that 15% of all cases of sudden death are due to a pulmonary embolism.
