Fosamax side effects increase the risk of a serious dental problem, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw.  Lawsuits are pending across the country against the manufacturer, with the first trials scheduled to begin next year.  Merck has failed to properly warn about these side effects, which has significantly increased the problem for users.   While taking Fosamax, avoiding simple dental procedures, such as tooth extractions, could greatly reduce the risk of jaw problems.  However, users were not provided with sufficient information to understand and appreciate the risks.

Fosamax (alendronate sodium) is a medication given to many postmenopausal women who have to contend with osteoporosis.  The medication is part of a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates, which can lead to decay of the jaw bone.  The risk of Fosamax dental problems increase the longer the medication is used, since the drug has a very long half-life, which results in dose accumulation for the user.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is an irreversible form of damage to the jaw, in which the bone decays and dies.  It is often associated with jaw infection and portions of the jaw bone may become exposed inside the mouth.  ONJ can be extremely painful and potentially disfiguring, as surgery may be required to remove portions of the dead jaw bone.

Since there is no effective treatment for osteonecrosis of the jaw, most experts recommend preventative actions to avoid dental problems while taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates.  Dental experts recommend that those taking the osteoporosis drug avoid dental surgery, tooth extractions or other procedures which could irritate or cause the condition to become symptomatic and infected.

Merck has failed to adequately warn users of the drug of the dangers of Fosamax dental problems, which has compounded the risks since users are unaware that they should avoid even minor trauma to the jaw.  Fosamax lawsuits are being filed nationwide for users who have been diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw.  Merck has known that Fosamax side effects increase the risk of jaw decay, yet they have actively minimized the risks associated with their medication in an effort to protect the profits that are generated by the drug.
