Hospital malnutrition in elderly patients
According to new research, elderly hospital patients may not be receiving sufficient food and caloric intake. This could increase the risk of hospital malnutrition and dehydration, which could lead to additional medication complications, including death.

A report published in the July 2007 Journal of the American Geriatric Society evaluated the energy intake and expenditures of 90 ill hospitalized patients between 65 and 99 years of age. French researchers found that the elderly patients received an intake which is “notably inadequate”.
The amount being received is equivalent to what is needed to sustain vital functions in healthy adults, but those battling an illness expend more energy. Researchers concluded that higher caloric intake for elderly patients may reduce problems associated with hospital malnutrition.
Every individual needs a certain amount of fluid and nutrition to maintain their health and life. Malnutrition occurs when insufficient vitamins and minerals are received by the body, which is often caused by not getting enough food. Dehydration occurs when insufficient fluids are received. Elderly are at an increased risk, since they often fail to monitor their own intake of food and water.
Dehydration and malnutrition can lead to serious medical complications as well as new injuries. Some common problems which may develop include:
- Generalized weakness resulting in falls and fractures
- Insufficient energy to reposition themselves leading to bed sores
- Urinary tract infections, Pneumonia and Anemia
- Death
