Lawsuits Over Side Effects of NuvaRing Birth Control

NuvaRing is an insertable birth control device that releases hormones directly into the vagina over the course of a month to prevent pregnancy.

Please note that the lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are no longer taking on new cases involving NuvaRing. The content on this page is provided for informational purposes only.

Studies have suggested that side effects of NuvaRing may cause women to face an increased risk serious blood clots, which could leave women with a devastating injury as result of a:

  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Stroke
  • Heart Attack

As a result of the drug maker’s failure to adequately warn about these NuvaRing health risks, users who suffered an injury may be entitled to financial compensation through a NuvaRing side effect lawsuit. NUVARING BLOOD CLOT RISK

Nuva Ring birth control releases a combination of ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel, which is known as a “third generation” progestin.

While nearly all forms of hormone-based birth control carry a blood clot risk, research suggests that side effects of NuvaRing may cause women to face a substantially greater risk when compared to some older birth control pills. This may be the result of exposure to high levels of estrogen.

Blood clots, also known as thrombosis, occur when blood cells clump together in the vein, restricting the flow of blood through that particular vein.

If the clot develops in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis or arms, it may result in a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from NuvaRing, which poses a serious danger since the blockage of vital arteries may restrict blood flow to the heart, lungs or brain. As a result, an individual could suffer sudden death, a heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism from NuvaRing.

Research published in the British Medical Journal in May 2012 confirmed that users of NuvaRing do face a greater risk of blood clots than is associated with some older birth control pills. Researchers found that side effects of NuvaRing may pose a 6.5 times increased risk of venous thrombosis when compared to women taking no birth control and about 2 times the risk compared to women who used birth control pills containing levonorgestrel.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in June 2012 also found that use of the birth control ring may double the risk of suffering a thrombotic stroke, where a blood clot disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, or a heart attack, where a blod clot blocks a coronary artery.

Despite the risk of NuvaRing blood clots, Organon Pharmaceuticals, Schering-Plough and Merck, the drug’s manufacturers, have aggressively marketed the birth control ring as an alternative to birth control pills without adequately warning consumers or the medical community. As a result, women who have suffered a serious NuvaRing blood clot injury may be entitled to financial compensation.
