Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is a serious complication which can result from E-coli O157:H7 food contamination.  As a result of E-coli, most healthy adults suffer abdominal cramps and diarrhea which resolves in about a week.  However, approximately 10% of the cases result in hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is associated with kidney failure and could be deadly.

Nearly all cases of hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) are caused by E. Coli O157:H7.  Children, elderly and people with weak immune systems are at a high risk of developing hemolytic-uremic syndrome.

If food is contaminated with E coli, the bacterium can infect the large intestine causing bloody diarrhea.  If the E-coli toxins are absorbed into the blood stream, it can cause more serious complications, including sudden kidney failure.  Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is associated with sudden decreases in blood platelets, destruction of red blood cells and kidney failure.  Other possible complications from HUS include nerve damage or brain damage which could result in seizures or stroke.

People who suffer HUS often require intensive care hospital treatment and kidney dialysis.  Long-term complications could include hypertension, urinary abnormalities, renal failure and death. Hemolytic-uremic syndrome can also cause damage to other organs, including the pancreas, liver, brain and heart.

ECOLI LAWSUITS

In many cases E. Coli O157:H7 outbreaks are caused by food contamination which could have been prevented.  Although it is most commonly seen as a result of undercooked hamburger meat, it has also been found in other meats, produce, milk and certain juices.  Contamination can occur from improper handling on the farm, errors by the manufacturer, mistakes by the retailer or failure to fully cook meat.

Saiontz, Kirk & Miles investigates and reviews claims for serious hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) following E. Coli O157:H7 food contamination.  If you, a friend or family member have been diagnosed with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) or suffered serious injuries as a result of E. coli food contamination, request a free claim evaluation and consultation.
