The powerful painkilling lollipop, Actiq, is widely overused, which increases the risk of abuse, addiction and serious side effects.  A recent study confirmed that over 90% of prescriptions for Actiq are off-label, or for uses which are not approved by the FDA.  As a result, thousands of users have suffered injuries which could have been prevented if they had been given a less powerful medication.

Actiq is a narcotic pain killer which is delivered in a berry-flavored lozenge on the end of a stick.  Although it is an extremely powerful and addictive drug, it tastes like a lollipop and is very easy to use.

Approval was granted by the FDA in 1998 for use in cancer patients who may experience spikes in pain despite the use of other drugs.  However, a study conducted by Prime Therapeutics found that only 10% of all Actiq prescriptions were in accordance with FDA guidelines.  As a result of negligent promotion by the manufacturer, the drug has been prescribed for much less serious ailments, such as chronic back pain, knee pain and migraine headaches.

The Actiq study analyzed health insurance records and found that 90% of those who were prescribed the fentanyl lollipop did not have a diagnosis of cancer or AIDS.  The research also found that over 15% of the prescriptions were for more lollipops per month than recommended by the FDA, suggesting overuse and abuse by those who received prescriptions.

Given the risk of Actiq side effects, precautions should have been taken to make sure that the drug was only prescribed to those who fit the profile approved by the FDA.  The widespread overuse of Actiq appears to be another example of a pharmaceutical company placing profits ahead of the safety of consumers.  Actiq side effects include the risk of overdose, abuse and potentially fatal respiratory complications.
