On July 9, the American Association for Justice (AAJ) released a report detailing the worst insurance companies for consumers in the United States. They outlined the tactics these insurance companies employ to force claimants to accept less than they are entitled to, putting profits before their policyholder. The findings come as no big surprise to most accident lawyers who deal with these insurance companies every day, but most consumers are unaware that even if they pay their premiums on time, they may not be “in good hands” with Allstate and some of the other insurers on this list.

The report includes information gathered from investigations of thousands of financial and legal documents, which highlight patterns of greed and evasion among 10 well-known insurance companies. Information is provided about tactics used to avoid or delay paying claims, raising premiums and rewarding their executives with high salaries and bonuses for using tough tactics with policyholders that increase profits.

The insurers listed in the report (ranked with the worst companies first) inlcude:

  • Allstate
  • Unum
  • AIG
  • State Farm
  • Conseco
  • Wellpoint
  • Farmers
  • United Health
  • Torchmark
  • Liberty Mutual

In the section of the report about Allstate Insurance Company, which was ranked worst, the AAJ details how policyholders were forced to either accept low payouts on claims, or face its aggressive strategies to ‘deny, delay, defend’ at all costs.

“While Allstate publicly touts its ‘good hands’ approach, it has instead privately instructed its agents to employ a ’boxing gloves’ strategy against its policyholders,” said AAJ CEO Jon Haber in a related press release. “Allstate ducks, bobs and weaves to avoid paying claims to increase its profits.”
