The Mentor Corp. stopped selling their ObTape vaginal sling in 2006, only three years after they introduced the bladder lift mesh to treat female stress urinary incontinence. Years later, problems with the ObTape sling continue to affect women, causing many to suffer chronic pain, infection and erosion of vaginal tissues.

>>INFORMATION: ObTape Vaginal Sling Problems

The ObTape Transobturator Sling was surgically implanted in thousands of women between 2003 and 2006, to support their bladder. However, unlike other similar products, the ObTape vaginial sling was made of non-woven fibers that blocked oxygen and vital nutrients from reaching the tissue.

This can cause problems where the mesh penetrates the upper wall of the vagina, causing irritation and vaginal infections, with symptoms like:

  • Vaginal Discharge
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Pain During Intercourse

In many cases, women who are experiencing ObTape bladder lift complications require surgery to attempt to remove the vaginal sling mesh. However, this may still result in excruciating pain and permanent disability.

In December 2008, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation established an MDL (Multidistrict Litigation) to handle all federal Mentor ObTape bladder sling lawsuits filed in various courts throughout the United States. Those cases have been centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, and the first trials are on track to begin in early 2010.

Although the ObTape was not used after 2006, new cases continue to be filed for women who have experienced problems with the vaginal sling.
