  • Merging of the Sling with Surrounding Tissue
  • Infection

  • Urinary Problems
  • Pain During Sexual Intercourse
  • Complications During Surgical Mesh Removal

Cook Surgisis Vaginal Mesh Problems

Problems with transvaginal mesh or bladder sling systems marketed by a number of different medical device manufacturers have caused thousands of women throughout the United States to suffer severe injuries after surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence.

Unlike most vaginal mesh products, which are synthetic, the Surgisis Biodesign bladder sling is different because it is made using the small intestines of pigs.

The Cook Surgisis Biodesign Urethral Sling was first approved in September 1999, and the Surgesis Biodesign Tension-Free Urethral Sling was approved in April 2002.

While Cook Medical has suggested that the organic origins make their surgical mesh products less likely to cause complications such as infections, many women have experienced severe and debilitating complications.

Studies have indicated that that vaginal mesh based on pig intestines may actually show a higher risk of inflammatory response, have a lower tensile strength than synthetic mesh, and some reports indicate that it adheres to the surrounding tissue in a way that makes it extremely difficult to remove.

The Cook mesh carries a similar risk of vaginal mesh problems associated with competing products, such as erosion of the mesh into the vagina, pain, and a recurrence of the urinary problems that led the women to have the mesh implanted in the first place.

Not only do these products pose a risk of serious complications, but the FDA has warned that there is little or no evidence that transvaginal insertion of a bladder sling provides any benefit over other available treatments for POP.

Cook Surgesis Biodesign Surgical Mesh Lawyers

Compensation may be available through a Cook Surgisis Biodesign transvaginal mesh lawsuit as a result of the manufacturer’s failure to adequately research their product or warn about the serious risk of complications and problems.

As a result of their decision to place profits over patient safety, many women were exposed to a risk of painful and disfiguring injuries that may permanently impact their quality of life.
