Blood clots (also known as thrombosis) occur when blood cells clump together in the vein, thereby restricting the blood flow through that particular vein.  They can lead to serious medical complications and can be potentially deadly. Blood clots can form in the superficial veins which are closer to the skin or in the deep veins, known as deep vein thrombosis. If these clots break free they could cause sudden death or other serious medical complications, including a pulmonary embolism.
