Over the next two weeks, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is promoting a Click It or Ticket campaign to help increase the use of seatbelts and reduce the risk of serious injuries suffered in auto accidents throughout the country. Various law enforcement agencies are participating by conducting “high visibility” efforts to enforce seatbelt laws between May 19 and June 1, 2008.

The Click It or Ticket campaign will focus mostly on young adult males, promoting use of seatbelts both during the day and at night. Accident statistics suggest that men and young adults between 18 and 34 years old are the least likely to use seat belts. The CDC WISQARS (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System) indicates that young adult males have an specially high rates of auto accident deaths.

According to 2006 traffic safety facts compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2.7 million people were treated in emergency rooms following car crashes, and over 32,000 accident deaths occurred over the course of the entire year. The use of seatbelts can reduce the risk of serious injury or death in an accident
