FDA officials are investigating a potential connection between heart failure and Mirapex side effects, indicating that use of the Parkinson’s disease drug may cause users to face an increased risk. The product liability lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are closely monitoring this investigation and evaluating whether individuals diagnosed with heart failure may be entitled to financial compensation through a Mirapex lawsuit.

The FDA issued a drug safety communication this week, after data received from the drug maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, suggested that Mirapex may increase the risk of heart failure. While the FDA is unable to conclude based on the available data whether side effects of Mirapex cause heart failure, the agency is working with the drug maker and indicates that it will provide further updates when more information becomes available.

Mirapex (pramipexole) is a dopamine agonist, which works by taking the place of the biochemical dopamine in parts of the brain that are involved in muscle control.

At this time, the FDA has indicated that doctors should continue to prescribe Mirapex according to the current labeling and patients have been advised to continue using the medication unless they are told to stop by their doctor.

Users have been urged to contact their doctor if they experience any signs or symptoms of heart failure with Mirapex use, which could include:

  • Shortness of Breath (either with or without exercise)
  • Swelling of the Feet, Angles, Legs or Abdomen
  • Fatigue and Weakness
  • Rapid or Irregular Heart Beat
  • Chest Pain
  • Persistent Cough or Wheezing (which may produce white or pink blood-tinged phlegm)

At least two other epidemiological studies have been evaluated by the FDA, which also suggest that there may be an increased risk of heart failure from Mirapex. However, there were a number of limitations in those studies, which prevent the FDA from being able to conclude there is a connection at this time.

It appears possible that Boehringer Ingelheim may have known, or should have known, about the potential Mirapex heart failure risk earlier. If the drug maker failed to adequately research the side effects of Mirapex or warn about the potential risk of heart failure, financial compensation may be available through a product liability lawsuit.

If you, a friend or family member have been diagnosed with heart failure while using this drug, submit information to be included as part of our review of the potential for Mirapex heart failure lawsuits.
