BEYAZ SIDE EFFECTS

Beyaz (drosperinone/ethinyl estradiol/levomefolate calcium) is a new version of the popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin, which includes a folate supplement. The new pill was approved by the FDA in September 2010, despite concerns about a potential risk of blood clots from drospirenone birth control pills.

At the time Beyaz was approved, Yaz and Yasmin accounted for approximately 25% of the oral birth control market in the United States. However, sales had fallen as the popular pills faced competition from generic equivalents and concerns mounted about the risk of Yaz and Yasmin side effects.

Beyaz is the first birth control pill approved in the United States that contains a means to raise folate levels in women, with each pill containing 451 mcg of levomefolate calcium. However, research suggests that women may face the same increased risk of blood clots from Beyaz as have been associated with Yaz and Yasmin.

Drospirenone, the “fourth” generation progestin contained in the birth control pills may disrupt the body’s ability of regulating the balance between salt and water. This can cause elevated potassium levels, a condition known as hyperkalemia, which can cause potentially life-threatening problems and other health issues.
