ZITHROMAX SIDE EFFECTS REVIEWED BY FDA

In March 2013, the FDA issued a drug safety communication about the potential risk of heart death from Zithromax side effects. The agency indicated that the warning label would be strengthened to include new information in the Warnings and Precautions section about the risk of QT interval prolongation and torsades de points, which is a serious heart rhythm abnormality that may increase the risk death.

The FDA warnings came following an investigation launched in May 2012, after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicated that users of the antibiotic may face an increased risk of death in the first five days after being prescribed the medication. Researchers at Vanderbilt University found that Zithromax users were 2.5 times more likely to die from cardiovascular probelms than patients given amoxycillim.

Zithromax Z-Pak heart problems appeared to be linked to changes in heart rhythms, including QT interval prolongation, which can lead to torsades de points.

Known generically as azithromycin, Zithromax was first introduced by Pfizer in 1991. Although it is also available as a generic, the medication generated more than $450 million in sales for Pfizer in 2011.

It appears that Pfizer may have failed to adequately research the potential Zithromax side effects or warn users about the increased risk of heart problems or death. As a result of a decision to place their desire for profits before consumer safety, families of individuals who died may be eligible to pursue compensation through a Zithromax class action lawsuit or individual wrongful death claim.
