An 11 year-old saved his father’s life after a Yamaha Rhino rolled over on his leg

Last week, the Keeseville, New York Volunteer Fire Department honored an 11 year old boy for saving his father’s life after he was trapped under a Yamaha Rhino ATV that rolled over. Ryan Mills and his father, Albert Mills, were riding the side-by-side utility vehicle in the woods near their home when it tipped over while they were going around a turn The father’s leg became pinned under the 2,000 pound vehicle, causing severe and life-threatening injuries.

According to PressRepublican.com, the 11 year old boy was able to use a log roller they had in the back of the ATV to lift the vehicle enough for his father to push himself out. The child then ran three quarters of a mile to the house and drove the family’s pickup truck back to get his father.

The father’s leg came out of the vehicle as it started to tip over, and was trapped under the ATV. This occurred in April 2007, before Yamaha began offering free after-market doors and hand-holds to help prevent riders’ limbs from falling out during a roll-over. As a result of the accident, Albert Mills suffered multiple fractures and infections. Fourteen months after the ATV accident, he is still recovering from the accident, has been through multiple operations and continues to requires crutches.

A substantial amount of blood was lost as a result of the trauma, and Albert Mills indicated that he probably would have bleed to death if it had not been for his son’s heroic actions.

    I know Al and Ryan well. Al is still limping a lot and having problems with his leg. He will never be the same. Good luck.
