A Raptiva recall was issued in April 2009, after it was determined that the drug may expose users to a risk of serious and potentially life-threatening injury. Although it has been almost two years since the recall was issued, individuals may still have time to pursue a Raptiva lawsuit before their claim may be barred by the statute of limitations.

Raptiva was approved in October 2003 by Genentech, Inc. and Xoma LLC as a treatment of psoriasis. It is part of a class of medications known as biologics, which are produced by means of biological processes involving recombinant DNA technology. In October 2008, the FDA updated the warning label about the risk of Raptiva infections. In February 2009, a public health advisory was issued about the risk of Raptiva brain infections, known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy or PML, which are often fatal. A recall of Raptiva was then issued in April 2009 after it was determined that the risks associated with the medication outweigh the benefits as a treatment for psoriasis.

The manufacturers failed to adequately research and test the potential risk of these Rapitiva problems, and knew or should have known that long-term immunosuppression from Raptiva side effects would increase the likelihood of serious life-threatening infections, neurological complications, lymphomas, malignancies and possibly death.

Individuals may be entitled to financial compensation through a Raptiva lawsuit if they have developed any of the following ailments after taking the psoriasis medication:

  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis
  • Bacterial Sepsis
  • Erythroderma
  • Invasive Fungal Disease
  • Neurological Complications
  • Malignancy
  • Lymphoma
  • Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Colon Cancer
  • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)
  • Brain Infection
  • Other Infection or Lymphoma
