Peanut butter recall may apply to ice cream as well
UPDATE 1/12/2009: Another peanut butter recall has been issued by King Nut Companies for large tubs of peanut butter distributed to hospitals, schools, nursing homes and other food service institutions, which may be contaminated with salmonella.
On March 1, 2007, the FDA confirmed that salmonella bacteria was found at the manufacturing plant where recently recalled peanut butter was made. This suggests that the salmonella contamination occurred at the plant. It is believed that dirty jars or unsanitary conditions may have caused the food poisoning for hundreds of people nationwide.
>>PRIOR POST 2/23/07: Salmonella found in open jars of peanut butter
The salmonella bacteria found at the peanut buter plant in Sylvester, Georgia was the same strain found in opened jars tested by the CDC last week after consumers become sick with food poisoning. The strain is known as Salmonella Tennessee, which is otherwise a rare form of the germ.
Since the peanut butter recall, hundreds of individuals have come forward and reported that they experienced food poisoning after eating peanut butter. For individuals who have received medical treatment or been hospitalized, there may be financial compensation available.
