A nursing home employee in Ohio faces murder charges after pushing an elderly resident causing him to fall and suffer injuries which ultimately led to his death.  This nursing home abuse had devastating consequences, yet such use of force is not uncommon in facilities across the country.

According to Cleveland News Channel 5, the coroner in Bedford, Ohio has ruled the death of John Kovach a homicide after he suffered a skull facture and broken neck, which ultimately lead to a fatal heart attack.  He was a resident at the Aspen Woodside Village nursing home, when a 37 year old employee intentionally shoved him forcefully, causing him to fall.  Several witnesses told police that they saw the employee push Kovach and then watch him fall.

While such an act of aggression towards a helpless and frail nursing home resident seems unimaginable to most people, every day our nursing home lawyers hear stories of incredible abuse and neglect which occur at facilities across the country.  While most acts of nursing home abuse do not directly result in death, even a minimal amount of force can cause serious injuries for elderly residents who already have limited independence.

In many situations, the nursing home abuse and neglect are caused by the facilities failure to provide proper staffing, training and supervision.  When nursing home employees are placed in a situation where they are asked to do something which is beyond their ability, they often lose their patience and take out their frustration on the resident.  Without proper training and support, nursing home injuries can occur when a resident is not doing what the employee wants them to, or is not moving as fast as they wish they would.

Individuals who have loved ones in a nursing home need to take extra care to watch for signs of neglect and abuse, since the resident is often too scared or ashamed to report acts of violence.  To reduce the risk of abuse, family members should visit at unexpected times and keep an eye out for signs of abuse or neglect.

Mercy Hosptial in Rogers AR caused a bed sore and did not treat it causng it to grow from the size of a lemon to the size of a orange (I took pitures of the negelect) she is having to have debreeinng (may not be spelled correctly) once a week to heal this. She is 90 years old. She broke her hip and all of this occurred. She is in a rehab home now only to find that she has blood clots in her leg. She had to go back to the hospital for medicattion and the nurse in ER beat her hands with a spoon to get veins to pop up as she was telling her to quit.
