Last week, a segment on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams highlighted the growing concerns over the risks associated with da Vinci robotic surgery, including the aggressive marketing tactics employed by the surgery robot’s manufacturer, Intuitive Surgical. The video raises many of the same allegations presented in da Vinci robot lawsuits being pursued on behalf of patients who have suffered complications following robotic surgery, including burns, tears and other internal injuries.
The NBC video focuses on problems experienced by a woman who underwent robotic surgery for a hysterectomy, and has been left with horrific side effects. While she first believed that she was just unlucky, the segment highlights how she is not alone and that da Vinci robot surgery risks may be more common than the manufacturer has disclosed in their marketing and promotional materials.

The da Vinci Surgical System is a complex robot that is controlled by a physician with hand and foot controls while looking at a screen on a module several feet from the surgical table. Robotic surgery has grown in popularity in recent years, becoming widely used for a variety of procedures from hysterectomies to cancer surgery.
As NBC News highlights, Intuitive Surgical has engaged in aggressive marketing practices that put pressure on hospitals to purchase the system and then put pressure on surgeons to convert traditional procedures to robot-assisted surgery. The $1.5 million robot has even been sold to smaller hospitals that may not have the volume of procedures to allow a surgeon to become proficient in use of the device and which has resulted in pressure to use the machine as often as possible to help recoup the costs.

The da Vinci robot lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. represent individuals nationwide who have experienced problems following robotic surgery that may have been caused by problems with the machine, inadequate training provided for physicians or a failure to adequately disclose the da Vinci surgery risks. As a result of Intuitive Surgical’s apparent decision to place their desire for profits before patient safety, financial compensation may be available through a product liability lawsuit.
