Starting in September 2008, a nationwide food poisoning outbreak began to surface involving Salmonella Typhimurium. As of January 18, 2009, over 470 cases of salmonella typhimurium infections in 43 states, including at least 90 hospitalizations and 6 deaths.

The source of the Salmonella typhimurium contamination has been linked to a processing plant operated by Peanut Corporation of America in Georgia.

The plant manufactures large containers of peanut butter served at hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other cafeterias and food service locations, as well as peanut paste used as an ingredient in many commercially produced products containing peanut butter, such as crackers, cookies, candy and ice cream.

The peanut butter recall attorneys at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. reviewed a number of food poisoning claims on behalf of individuals throughout the United States who have been diagnosed with salmonella typhimurium illneses. New cases are no longer being accepted as a result of this Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak.

TIMELINE OF PEANUT BUTTER RECALLS

Below is a timeline of peanut butter recalls issued as of January 19, 2009 for products which may be contaminated, potentially leading to samonella food poisoning.

September 2008 – Food Poisoning Cases Surface: The first clusters of illnesses involving Salmonella Typhimurium food poisoning begin to appear, with most confirmed cases arising between October 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008.

January 7, 2008 – Investigation of Salmonella Outbreak: The CDC indicates that they are investigating the cause of a food poisoning outbreak involving Salmonella Typhimurium strain of the bacteria which had sickened 388 people in 42 states.

January 10, 2009 – King Nut Peanut Butter Recall: King Nut Companies, a distributor of large containers of peanut butter to hospitals, schools, nursing homes and other food service institutions, issued a peanut butter recall after salmonella was detected in at least one open five pound container of peanut butter.

January 13, 2009 – Peanut Corporation of America Peanut Butter Recall: The manufacturer who supplied the peanut butter distributed by King Nut issued a recall for 21 lots of large 5 pound, 35 pound, 45 pound and 50 pound containers of peanut butter made at a processing plant in Georgia.

January 16, 2009 – Peanut Paste Recall: As a result of potential salmonella contamination, Peanut Corporation of America expanded their prior recall to include all peanut butter produced on or after August 8, 2008 and all peanut past produced on or after September 26, 2008.

January 16, 2009 – Kellogg Peanut Butter Cracker Recall and Peanut Butter Cookie Recall: Kellogg Company recalled several products produced on or after July 1, 2008, which may contain peanut butter or peanut paste manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, Inc., including:

  • Keebler Peanut Butter Crackers
  • Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies
  • Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies

January 17, 2008 – HyVee Peanut Butter Cookie Recall: Hy-Vee, Inc. issued a recall for baked goods sold in stores throughout the central United States, including:

  • Peanut Butter Cookies
  • Monster Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Reese’s Pieces Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Lunchbox Reese’s Pieces Cookies
  • Lunchbox Peanut Butter Cookies
  • People Chow Party Mix
  • Assorted Truffle Fudge.

January 17, 2008 – Perry’s and Wegmans Peanut Butter Ice Cream Recall: Perry’s Ice Cream recalled products containing peanut butter sauce made by Peanut Corporation of America and distributed throughout the mid-Atlantic, including variations of:

  • Perry’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream
  • Perry’s Peanut Butter Frozen Yogurt
  • Shurfine Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream
  • Wegmans Peanut Butter Ice Cream.

January 18, 2008 – Little Debbie Peanut Butter Cracker Recall: Two varieties of Little Debbie crackers produced on or after July 1, 2008, were recalled, including all sizes of:

  • Little Debbie Peanut Butter Toasty Sandwich Crackers
  • Little Debbie Peanut Butter Cheese Sandwich Crackers.

January 18, 2009 – Chocolate Peanut Butter Candy Recall: South Bend Chocolate Company recalled candy containing peanut butter, including:

  • Assorted Chocolate Boxes
  • Hoosiers
  • Valentine Heart.

January 18, 2009 – Food Lion Peanut Butter Cookie, Walmart Peanut Butter Cookie and Other Peanut Butter Cookie Recalls: Ralcorp Frozen Bakery Products recalled:
