UPDATED INFORMATION: Complete MoisturePLUS Recall

Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. has announced a Complete Moisture Plus contact lens solution recall of nearly 3 million bottles.  The recall was initiated because of a bacterial contamination which could lead to a serious eye injury.

>>UPDATE 5/25/2007: Complete Moisture Plus linked to serious eye infections

A contact lens solution bacterial contamination may compromise the sterility of the product.  This can lead to eye infections and microbial keratitis.  Any contact lens users who have the recalled Complete MoisturePLUS solution, should discontinue use and contact their doctor if they develope any signs of an eye infection.

Eye infection symptoms may include:

  • redness
  • pain
  • tearing
  • increased sensitivity to light
  • blurry vision
  • discharge
  • swelling

Although the recall involves nearly 3 million of the Complete MoisturePLUS 12 ounce bottles and Active Packs, it has been indicated that under 200,000 of these units were shipped within the United States.  This would account for only 1% of the Complete MoisturePLUS contact lens solution products distributed in the US on an annual basis.  Therefore, the risk of exposure to the contaminated solution is low.

The FDA and Advanced Medical Optics have indicated that there have been no reports of adverse reactions associated with the contact lens solution.  However, it is not uncommon for serious complications to be reported weeks or months after the official announcement of a product recall.

I used this Renew product for a long time, and now I have chronic sensitivity, irritable eyes, chronic dryness and pain, greatly decreased vision and I can no longer wear contact leanses because of these symptoms. I don’t think I had a fungal infection, but I only see an eye doctor when I require a new prescription or pinkeye infection. Do I have a case?

    Kelly,
The contact lens solution discussed in this article is different from the Bausch & Lomb ReNu with Moisture Loc solution which was recalled in April 2006. The ReNu with Moisture Loc solution has been linked to fungal eye infections. At this time, we are only pursuing cases for individuals who have been diagnosed with a fungal eye infection. It should be pointed out that often fungal eye infections are misdiagnosed as bacterial infections. If you believe that you may have had a serious fungal eye infection which was misdiagnosed as a bacterial infection, complete our consultation request form to speak with a member of our team who can review this with you further.

I had been using the AMO Complete MoisturePLUs for 1 year(purchase receipts to prove) when I developed Microbal Keratitis (doctor report to prove) in April of 2007. Due to the severity of my infection, I had a cyst that formed on my eye. Had it formed in the right spot, I would be blind right now. Because of this solution, I am unable to wear my contacts for extended periods. In the last 16 years that I have been wearing contacts, this is the first problem I have ever had. Thanks to this solution, my life and my enjoyment of it has changed. I have had expenses that have meant debt to my family. I believe that I deserve justice!!!!!!!!!!!
