The Bumbo Baby Seat, also known as the Bumbo Baby Sitter, has been recalled after 28 serious head injuries have been reported when young children fell out of the seats.  Over 1 million of the child seats were sold in the United States.

Bumbo Seat Recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the baby seat recall since the product does not contain adequate warnings that the seat should not be placed on any elevated surface, such as a table or chair.   The seats are designed for young children who still require support to sit up, but the CPSC indicates that children could arch their backs and flip out of the seat.  So far, there have been reports of at least 3 children who suffered a skull fracture when they fell out of the seat.

Bumble Baby Sitter seats are manufactured by the South African company, Bumble International.  The seats have been sold for about $40 throughout the United States since 2003 at a wide variety of retailers, including Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Toys ‘R’ US, USA Babies and more.

While many parents indicate that they have found the seats useful when placed on the floor with careful monitoring, the seats do not provide adequate protection against falling.

Bumbo Seat Recall

If the baby seats are placed on a table or any other elevated surface, the child could tumble backwards out of the seat, putting the head neck and spine at serious risk.  Current warnings do indicate” “Never use on a raised surface.  Never use as a car seat or bath seat.  Designed for floor level use only.  Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigrorous movement.”  However, some promotional materials show the seat being used on an elevated surface, which may have caused confusion for many parents who regularly placed the seats on counter tops, chairs, sofas and other raised surfaces.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the Bumbo seat recall so that proper warnings can be placed on the product clearly indicating that the seats should never be used on an elevated surface.  The new warning will state: “WARNING: Prevent Falls: Never use on any elevated surface”

Consumers who wish to continue using the seats can obtain new warning label stickers and instructions from Bumbo by calling (877) 932-8626.  If your child or a family member suffered a serious or catastrophic head injury after falling out of the Bumbo baby seat, request a free consultation to review your legal rights.

I don’t know if they can be returned. I would like to know that too. I have one that I don’t use because my 6 month old flipped out of it while in it on out tile floor. thank Gid that she wasn’t injured but it scared me and I knew before the recall that the product is not safe. I no longer have the packaging that it came in but I would like a refund. I also purchased the tray that attaches to the Bumbo and would like to return that too.

Who in their right mind would think it was ok to leave a child on a table in this seat even if the package shows a parent useing it on a table?

Is common sense dead? Why would anyone leave their child unattended in one of these on an elevated surface. I used a Bumbo and LOVED it. I found them very useful. Anything can be a deathtrap if used inappropriately. As for the advertising, notice the child is not alone, an adult is standing right next to them.

One day I was preparing lunch and to keep an eye on my 6 month old baby i put her in a bumbo chair on top of the island counter… and after 10 seconds of busy lunch preparation, while keeping an eye on her wobbling around in the bumbo chair, i nearly freaked out because she seemed to almost be able to shift the chair! then i realized i had to put her on the floor where she can wobble around more safely… that’s the last time i ever put her on a raised surface!

REALLY PARENTS!!!! Even if the product does not have WARNINGS all over it for stupid people, common sense tells you NOT to use it as a device to keep your child WHO CAN’T EVEN SIT UP BY HIMSELF/HERSELF as a baby sitter!!! SHAME ON THOSE PARENTS WHO ASSUME THEY ARE SAFE!!!!
